Music Show Rocks Falmouth Stakes

Trainer Michael Channon was beside himself with joy when Music Show finally beat the curse of defeat she had suffered from all season. Since her narrow win in the Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket this April, Music Show had to deal with three painful defeats in Group 1 races like the 1,000 Guineas Stakes and the Coronation Stakes; so her connections joy at her wonderful victory yesterday is no surprise.

For the better part of the one mile race it looked like disaster was going to strike yet again. Music Show, travelling under Richard Hughes, was held up in the rear, seemingly unable to make it to the front of the field. Fanshawe-trained Spacious and Sir Michael Stoute’s Strawberrydaiquiri were setting a stiff pace early on, leaving Music Show behind as far as twelve lengths in the course of the race. After a few furlongs Hughes managed to position Music Show in the middle of the field and decided to bide his time, waiting for a chance to strike.

One of the finest strategists active on the track today, Hughes waited until the final furlong to attack. He moved his mount to the right and began an overtaking campaign spectators are unlikely to forget any time soon. Music Show ran an amazing final sprint, shooting to the front and overtaking the leaders, followed briefly by Frankie Dettori on Rainfall, who attempted to use the break for glory to his advantage.

Channon’s favourite girl crossed the line with two lengths to spare; former leader Spacious, under Kieren Fallon, made runner up, and Rainfall was third home.
For Music Show and her connections the win in the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes was a true cause to celebrate. However, the victory was further sweetened by the fact that the filly triumphed over almost every single rival who had beaten her in earlier races. The only runner left to wreak revenge upon is Jacqueline Quest. Channon is now planning to run Music Show in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September fourth; and perhaps pitch her in a battle against miracle mare Goldikova at a later point. Although there are no odds published as yet for Music Show’s next appearance make sure to check our favourite online bookmakers as the race draws closer.
